Description

Queen Isabel I of Castile Document Signed. One page, 8.62" x 11", Granada, [Spain]; November 6, 1509. Signed "Yo la Reyna [I the Queen]" by Isabel I and countersigned by royal carpenter Gerónimo de Palacios and royal notary. Matted and framed with images of Christopher Columbus, an informational excerpt, and a typed translation to the overall size of 22.25" x 17.25".

A rare document signed by Queen Isabel I of Castile ordering that approximately two yards of black velvet from her own fabric stock be given to her carpenter, Gerónimo de Palacios, so that a doublet and cap may be sewn for his son. Although a rather mundane order at first glance, this request reflects important understandings of status and wealth in early sixteenth-century Spain. Royal prohibitions restricted commoners from luxury textiles, including velvet, unless authorized by the Crown. At the same time, black fabrics were often associated with the nobility due to the high costs and intense labor required to produce a true dye. By offering enough of the fabric to produce two different garments, Isabel signaled that Palacios remained in her favor, thereby improving his family's upward mobility.

Perhaps most remembered for her pivotal role in backing Christopher Columbus' voyage to the Americas, Queen Isabel I irrevocably altered global history. Nodding to that fateful choice, this document comes with additional information on Columbus and his petition to the Queen. A translation has been included; however, details surrounding the date of the document and the name of the royal scribe are incorrect. Although contested, historians place the death of royal secretary and notary, Gaspar de Gricios (falsely spelled Trizios), around 1508 at the latest.

Condition: Not examined outside of the frame. Creasing along folds with cuts along center that appear to have been repaired on verso. Minor stain on upper left corner recto and small closed tears to right margin. Frame rubbed and cracked with paint chipping on all four sides.
