Description

Peter Faneuil Autograph Document Signed Endorsed by Thomas Hancock. Two pages, 8.25" x 4.5"; Boston, May 19, 1738. A draft of exchange made out to Thomas Hancock in the amount of "fifty one pounds four shillings & eight pence sterling." Signed "Peter Faneuil" at bottom and with an endorsement signature by Thomas Hancock on verso. Peter Faneuil (1700-1743) was a wealthy colonial American merchant best known for donating Faneuil Hall to Boston. Thomas Hancock (1703-1764) was a wealthy Boston merchant and a major supplier of the British army. When he died in 1764, his estate was inherited by his nephew, patriot John Hancock.

Condition: Flattened folds and creasing throughout. Uneven toning, with bold ink. Top margin is a bit uneven, where paper was removed from a larger sheet. There is a strip of paper adhered along left margin on verso, directly above Hancock's endorsement. Previous collector's note in pencil on verso.
