Description

Philip II, King of Spain, Document Signed "Yo el Rey." One page, 8.5" x 11.75", in Spanish (not translated), El Escorial, September 20, 1568. The document is addressed to the Gabriel de la Cueva y Girón, 5th Duke of Alburquerque and Governor of the Duchy of Milan. Philip was King of Spain as well as the King of Portugal. During his marriage to Queen Mary I of England (1554-1555) Philip was co-monarch with the titles King of England and King of Ireland. He was also pretender to the throne of France. Between 1588 and 1597 Philip dispatched three armadas against his wife's half-sister, Queen Elizabeth I in an effort install a Catholic monarch on the English throne. The document has folds, soiling, and repair of paper loss at the folds with a stamp from a previous collection. There are remnants of a red wax seal on the verso.
