Description

King William III Signed Military Appointment. One page on vellum, 16 1/4 x 12 3/4 inches, London; December 31, 1688. A royal military appointment issued by William III just weeks after deposing his father-in-law, King James II, in the Glorious Revolution. Signed at the lower right, "William Henry," with a blind-embossed paper seal affixed at the upper left.

The document reads, in part: "To Charles Manwaring Esquire We reposing...Trust and Confidence in your fidelity...appoint you to Co H Lieutenant Colonel of the Regiment of Foot - Commanded by Colonel Charles Churchill and likewise to be Captain of a Company in the same Regiment."

Signed only weeks after William's army entered London unopposed on December 18, 1688, seeking to depose his Catholic father-in-law, King James II. His successful invasion, known as the Glorious Revolution, forced James to flee to France and ended more than three years of deeply divisive rule. William's accession to the throne in early 1689, alongside his wife Mary II, established the constitutional framework of a Protestant monarchy.

Condition: Creased at folds. Pinholes at left and right edges from previous binding. Verso lightly toned.
