Description

King Louis XIV Document Signed. One page of vellum (in French), approximately 18 x 8 inches, Saint-Germain-en-Laye; January 30, 1679. In this official decree, King Louis XIV of France orders a delay in the collection of debts owed by Léon Potier, First Duke of Gesvres. The Potier family, ennobled in the late fifteenth century, rose to prominence under Louis XIII and maintained a close relationship with the crown through the reigns of Louis XIV, Louis XV, and Louis XVI. By the late seventeenth century, however, the family had begun to experience financial difficulties, as evidenced by this decree. The document reads, in large part (in translation):

"...We hereby command and order you, by these presents signed by our hand, that the decree, an extract of which is attached hereunder, under the counterseal of our chancery, given this day in our Council of State, us being present therein, at the request of our cousin the Duke of Gesvres, you shall notify all that it may concern and perform for the full execution thereof all necessary acts and actions without seeking permission." Signed, "Louis."

Condition: Age-typical toning and creasing. A few minor spots of loss, likely from previous binding, not affecting text.
