King James I Document Signed "James R." Two pages, 8" x 12", n. p., n. d. James places his regnal signature at the upper edge of a grant for forfeited land. Area of wrinkling; smoothed folds are weakened and separating at the edges. Edges are chipped in places. Uneven toning. James' signature is bold.

James (1566-1625) was the only son of Mary, Queen of Scots, and ascended to the throne of Scotland after his mother abdicated in 1567. Queen Elizabeth I of England, who had no children named as her successor, the son of her cousin, Mary, Queen of Scots, whom she had executed in February 1587 after discovering a plot Mary had hatched against her. James VI of Scotland was crowned James I of England following Elizabeth's death in 1603. In 1604, he commissioned a new English translation of the Hebrew Bible and New Testament, resulting in the King James Bible, still widely in use today. He was the first monarch of the Stuart dynasty, which lasted until 1714.
