Description

King Francis II of France Document Signed. One page (in French) on vellum, 19 x 12 inches, [France]; August 20, 1559. A legal document related to rent payments due for properties in Amiens, France. Signed by the young King of France just a month into his short reign, "Francoys."

King Francis II reigned as King of France from July 1559 until his death in December 1560. In 1558, when he was fourteen years old, Francis married Mary, Queen of Scots. The following year, his father, King Henry II, was fatally injured in a jousting accident, and the fifteen-year-old Francis ascended the throne. His reign, however, was brief—after only seventeen months as king, Francis died tragically from an ear infection, leaving the crown to his younger brother.

Condition: Creased at center fold. A few scattered stains. Wear and several holes punched at the left edge from previous binding, not affecting text.
