Description
King Charles II Title Grant Signed "Charles R." One page with integral blank, 7.5" x 12.25", "Court at Windsor [London]," July 19, 1679. Here, the king is bestowing upon Robert Paston the "...Title of Earl of Yarmouth...To have hold and enjoy the said title rank and dignity unto him...together with the annuall [sic] fee of twenty pounds per Annum payable out of our Exchequer..." Countersigned by Robert Spencer, 2nd Earl of Sunderland, a member of the Privy Council and Secretary of State for the Northern Department. Areas of toning. Folds are weak and separating at the edges in places, especially at the upper edge of the main vertical fold. Small pinholes cause some very minor loss of text, which is very bold with some areas of smudging.Charles II was the son Charles I who had been deposed and executed at the end of the English Civil War, leading to a twenty-one year period where England had no monarch known as the Interregnum. Though he had assumed the Scottish crown in 1649, he did not become King of England until the Restoration of 1660.
W.C. Putnam Collection for the benefit of the Acquisition and Conservation Fund of the Putnam Museum.
