Sir Francis Galton (1822-1911), the divisive half-cousin of Charles Darwin, was an English scientist and polymath. He was one of the first to recognize that Darwin's theory of evolution would have significant implications for mankind and worked with Darwin to expand upon it. A dedicated eugenicist who worked extensively in his later years to promote the idea of utilizing "selective parenthood" to enhance physical and mental makeup of the species.

Sir Richard Owen (1804-1892) was a British paleontologist and anatomist who was the first to recognize that a series of fossilized reptiles differed significantly from the reptiles of today. He christened this taxon Dinosauria in 1842. A controversial figure, he became an outspoken critic of Charles Darwin after the success of Origin of Species; he feared that Darwin's rise would mean the end of Owen's preeminence in the field.
