Description
Elizabeth I, Queen of England, Document Signed. "Elizabeth R". One page, 10" x 9", Greenwich England, June 27, 1559. Written on parchment with original wax seal still intact. Written in the first year of her illustrious reign, the young twenty-six year old Queen settles an account dating from her predecessor, "Bloody Mary". In this document Elizabeth orders that a widow be paid her husband's salary for services rendered before his death, and before her own accession to the throne! It reads in part (spelling is presented as is in the document): "We woll and commande you that of the Treasour of our Chambre being in your custody ye uppon the receipt hereof do contente and paye or cause to be contented and payed unto our loving subjecte Isabelle Wright widowe late the wife of Richard Wright deceased the somme of eight pounts sixteen shillings and eight pen[ce] as money to her due in the right of her said husband for the scouring of a ponde at our Manor of Grenewiche [Greenwich] in the tyme of the late Quene our Sister [Mary I] and by her commandement and these our letters shal be your sufficient warrant and discharge in this behalf...". One of the world's greatest monarchs ever to reign and certainly one who left her mark on the empire she ruled over. Documents signed by Elizabeth are not common and those signed before 1560 are even less so. As the final monarch of the Tudor dynasty, her legacy will be everlasting. Written is gorgeous court hand that is still very dark and saturated. The arms of Elizabeth are still very visible in the deep wax seal. In very fine condition; light soiling overall; weak folds visible vertically; perfect for display. A very rare item, for even the most astute collector.Auction Info
