Description
Catherine the Great Letter Signed "Catherine." Two pages with integral blank, 7.5" x 9", in Russian, [St. Petersburg], May 4, 1787. The Russian empress placed her signature upon this letter, written to Count Peter Alekseyevitch, in part and in translation: "It is a great pleasure for us to know from your reports that you are intending to set to work immediately in compliance with your wish about some constructions in the city of Kiev and others in your provinces. Your peculiar zeal to the duty . . . makes us sure all those efforts will be put in action with the best success. . . . We consider such constructions all the more useful and necessary . . . That was confirmed by the senators while they were inspecting the offices in Little Russia [Ukraine]. They found the arrears were up to one million rubles, in spite of a very moderate assessment. This cannot be accounted for by anything, but shortage of monetary circulation and problems collecting money, by using the construction works to increase contracts, and by hiring workers we multiply the monetary circulation for the benefit of the treasury and everyone." Earlier in the year, the empress made a six month tour of Southern Ukraine acquired from a war with the Ottoman Empire shortly before the outbreak of the Russo-Turkish War (1878-1792).
