Description
Banastre Tarleton Handwritten Lullaby. Two pages, 7 1/2 x 9 inches, [no place]; circa 1812. A patriotic song in Tarleton's hand, entitled in the top margin, "The New Lullaby or Liverpool Awake." Written during Britain's long war with Napoleonic France, the verses urge Britons to rise up in defense of their nation, invoking Tarleton's own service during the American Revolutionary War. It reads, in part:"From the clouds of dark deception,
patriot virtue meets our Eye!
O! give the ray a kind reception,
Britons wake from lullaby...
Rouse from slumber gallant Spirits
Lift the mantling goblet high,
our Tarleton's worth your favor merits,
He, who scorns, Life's lullaby...
Sloth and ever dozing folly
From his active bosom fly;
Then, let the base be melancholy,
Virtue wants no lullaby...
Hearts of Oak shall guard the nation,
England's glory ne'er shall die...
Tarleton is no purchas'd rover;
He bids freedom's standard fly!"
A note in the left margin reads: "If there are too many verses, the first may be omitted."
Tarleton was one of the most recognizable British names of the Revolutionary era, and by the early nineteenth century he was also a prominent public figure in domestic politics. He served as Liverpool's Member of Parliament from 1790 until 1812 and remained on the Army list until his formal retirement in 1815, marking four decades of service. While he did not hold an active field command during the Napoleonic Wars, he supported the army from the parliamentary chamber rather than the battlefield.
Condition: Somewhat toned with smoothed folds. Light dampstaining and minor wear at the left edge, not affecting text. Small close tear to centermost fold.
