Description

William J. Hardee Autograph Letter Signed " W. J. Hardee." Two pages, 8" x 9.75", Tullahoma, Tennessee; March 21, 1863. In a letter to Samuel Cooper, Adjutant and Inspector General, Richmond, Virginia, requests that " u Major /u T. B. Roy. Asst. Adjt. General and chief of my staff, may be promoted to the rank of u Lieut. Colonel /u . Major Roy possesses in a high degree those rare qualities of mind and temper which have enables him to discharge the duties of his position with credit to himself & advantage to the public. To a cultivated intellect he unites quickness of apprehension...energy and great suavity of manner."

William J. Hardee (1815-1873) was a Confederate general during the Civil War, where he served in the Western Theater.

Condition: Letter has the usual folds, toning, weakness along the upper horizontal fold, slight paper loss along left-hand margin, and residue of tape along the lower right-hand edge of the verso; otherwise good.
