Description
William Clark Autograph Letter Signed "Wm Clark." Two pages with integral address leaf, 8" x 10", St. Louis, December 7, 1821. Addressed to his nephew, Major Benjamin O'Fallon, he begins his letter by discussing the terrible weather and gives an account of sickness: "When Mary Fanor[?] got home she was taken with . . . asthma which lasted several days when little Charles was taken and both sick until a few days past, the child was very bad . . . they are now well."One year earlier, Clark's wife, Julia died. He married her first cousin, Harriet Radford, the following year and mentions the nuptials in this letter: "I must tell you what has taken place which I know you approve as I have consulted with you on the subject. On the 28th I married Mrs. Radford who now requests to be affectionately remembered to you."
He closes by stating that he has mailed a check in the amount of $757.50 "to the Secy of War by his request to be placed to your Order on the Books of the Treasury. The Col. has drawn from Maj. Graham that amount. The Secy writes me that he has authorized Graham to pay you $11.75 out of fund to be received from the Colector [sic] at New Orleans."
According to a notation on the address leaf, this letter went "unanswered." In 1816, while governor of the Missouri Territory, Clark appointed O'Fallon Indian agent to the Sioux with the rank of major. The year after writing this letter, Clark was named superintendent of Indian affairs by President James Monroe, a post he would hold until his death in 1838.
Condition: Smoothed folds. Light water staining has caused some discoloration, but does not affect the text, which is exceedingly bold. Separation at the intersection of the upper horizontal fold and right vertical fold. Minor paper loss on the address leaf from opening.
