Description
U.S. General John C. Caldwell Signature on a 5.5" x 5.75" sheet with added "Brig. Gen. U.S. Vols / Maine / May 8, 1865". Caldwell, even without any military experience, was elected colonel of the Maine 11th Infantry regiment in November, 1861 and then promoted to brigadier general in April, 1862 and placed in command of the 1st Brigade of the 1st Division of II Corps of the Army of the Potomac. After the war, he spent 40 years as a U.S. diplomat.Condition: Fine with light crinkling and toning.
