Tobias Lear Writes a Receipt for a Veteran of the War of 1812
Tobias Lear Autograph Letter Signed ("Tobias Lear").
One page, 7 3/4 x 10 inches; "Department of War Accountants
Office" [Washington]; December 29, 1815. Docketed on the
verso.A receipt by Lear addressed to Robert Brent, the first Mayor of Washington, being an account for Captain Thaddeus Coleman. In part:
"The accounts of Capt. Thaddeus Coleman late of the 26 Regiment of Infantry have been adjusted at the office and a balance of two hundred and ninety-five dollars and fifty five cents is found in his favor..."
Having established himself as the trusted personal secretary of George Washington from 1785 through his presidency, Lear held various war and treasury-related positions within the government including, as evinced in the present letter, the settlement of accounts for participants in the War of 1812.
Condition: Very good. Partially affixed to a separate sheet of paper. Creased with toning at the folds; separation at the bottom of the leftmost fold, affecting a few letters of the address line; minor soiling in right margin.
