Description

Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson Autograph Endorsement Signed. One page, 7.75" x 4.5" (sight), n.p., circa July 8, 1861. Placed at the lower edge of a "Requisition for Capt Ro[bert] F. Dennis Co. E 27 Regt Va Vols" for knapsacks, tents, belts, and other equipment. The order was first approved (and countersigned) by Lt. Col. John Echols, who was then in command of the 27th Virginia, but would go on to become a general in command of the Army of Southwestern Virginia and, later, the District of Southwest Virginia, before being passed along to his commander, Gen. Jackson. Upon receipt, Jackson placed his endorsement: "Approved / T.J. Jackson / Brig Genl / Comdg 1st Brigade." Slight smudging of the ink, else fine. Matted with an 8" x 10" engraved portrait of Jackson by Jacques Reich and framed to an overall size of 16.75" x 27.75".

Thirteen days later, Gen. Jackson would earn his famous nickname at the First Battle of Bull Run (July 21). Capt. Robert Flournoy Dennis (1823-1897) served in the Stonewall Brigade until the reorganization of the army in 1862 or 1863. He was captured in Virginia and imprisoned until January 1864, when he was exchanged and returned to the army. After the war, he served two terms in the Virginia State Senate.
