Description
Rufus Putnam document signed ("R. Putnam Col. Comd."). Two pages on one leaf, 8" x 12", New York; February 1, 1779. Docketed.Colonel Rufus Putnam signs payroll for a Massachusetts militia regiment.
Zechariah Watkins's payroll for his company in Colonel Ezra Wood's Massachusetts militia regiment. The document lists 17 men, including Watkins, with a total pay of $328.78. The company was comprised of 1 lieutenant, 2 sergeants, 2 corporals, 1 fifer, and 11 privates. The manuscript document is partially in the hand of Watkins and signed twice by him, as well as signed by Putnam. The document reads, in part:
"A Pay Roll of Lieut. Zechariah Watkins Company Coll. Ezra Woods Regt. for the Month of Janry. & Part of Feb. 1779... I Do swear that the foregoing Abstract and Pay Roll is just & without Fraud to the United States of America or any Individual according to my Best knowledge Sworn Before me in Quarters...in New York State Feby. 1st 1779. Zechariah Watkins Lieut." Signed, "R. Putnam Col. Comd."
Rufus Putnam (1738-1824), born in Sutton, Massachusetts, served as a military officer in the French and Indian War and the American Revolutionary War. Before enlisting in a Massachusetts regiment early in the Revolutionary War, Putnam worked as a millwright, farmer, and surveyor. He was appointed Chief of Engineers of the Works of New York General George Washington. Subsequently promoted to the rank of colonel, Putnam was responsible for the building of fortifications in Rhode Island and New York. He commanded two regiments at the Battle of Saratoga (September-October 1777) and, in 1778, he commanded a regiment under Major General Anthony Wayne. He reached the rank of brigadier general.
Zechariah Watkins (1741-1826), born in Stoughton, Massachusetts, served as a lieutenant in Ezra Wood's Regiment.
Ezra Wood (1726-1815), born in Mendon, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, served as a colonel of the Massachusetts militia from 1775 to 1779. The date of this payroll marked the end date of an eight-month enlistment of his regiment. He died in Worcester, Massachusetts.
Condition: Rough edges. Scattered soiling.
