Description
Robert Todd Autograph Document Signed, Also Signed by George R. Clark. Two pages, 8 1/2 x 6 1/2 inches, no place; August 11, 1784. A document recording the transfer of land between George Clark and Robert Todd written entirely in Todd's hand and signed by both men at the conclusion. Todd adds a lengthy autograph endorsement signed on the verso. Marked "Copy" on the recto.The document reads, in part: "Witnesseth that the said Ro. Todd doth engage to make over & properly convey to the said Geo. R. Clarke one half of his one thousand acres entry on Fort Jefferson to be divided equally. Quantity & quality. In consideration of which the said Geo. R. Clarke doth promise to make over and convey to the said Ro. Todd One half of his entry's of fifteen hundred acres made on the Red River adjoining the Caroline line, to be divided in like manner as the above."
Todd was a Revolutionary War veteran, co-founder of Lexington, Kentucky and great-uncle of Mary Todd Lincoln. Clark was a brigadier general in the Continental Army and the highest-ranking officer in the northwestern frontier. This is the first Clark signed document we have handled and is an excellent association for the two men. The land referenced was likely received as bounty for their service during the Revolutionary War.
Condition: Lightly toned with smoothed folds. Small pencil notations on the recto. Uneven edges. Left margin is reinforced with paper on the recto. Separations at folds reinforced with translucent tape on the verso, overlaying text but not affecting readability. Docketed on the verso.
