Description
Robert E. Lee Printed Order Signed "R E Lee." One page, 5" x 8", San Antonio, October 30, 1860. Just four months before Texas seceded from the Union, Robert E. Lee, a colonel in the U.S. Army and commander of the Department of Texas, issued General Orders, No. 17, whereby the department would restrict expenses by suspending "all repairs, alterations and improvements at Posts for which special appropriations have not been made." In addition, "allowance of forage to horses and mules will be reduced to one-half of the forage ration prescribed by regulations." The edges of this imprint are toned and the upper left corner is damaged.Following the secession of Texas in February 1861, Lee and 4,000 of his fellow soldiers were surrendered to the State of Texas by General David E. Twiggs, who immediately resigned his commission in the U.S. Army and accepted a commission as a general in the new army of the Confederate States. Lee returned to Washington and became colonel of the U.S. 1st Cavalry Regiment. The appointment was short-lived. Despite his misgivings about secession, Lee followed his home state of Virginia into the Confederate fold.
