Description
Robert E. Lee Letter Signed "RE Lee". One page, 7.25" x 9.5", West Point; June 14, 1853. Addressed to Quarter Master General, Major General Thomas S. Jesup, the letter transmits the results of a board of inquiry "recently convened at this post, at the request of the Commandant of Cadets, to examine certain articles of camp equipage represented as unfit for further service." Signed by Lee while serving as Superintendent of West Point. Thomas Sidney Jesup (1788-1860) was a career military officer, serving in the US Army for 52 years, and became known as the "Father of the Modern Quartermaster Corps."The letter is accompanied by a Robert E. Lee Carte de Visite. 2.5" x 4", no date, circa April 1865. Shortly after his surrender at Appomattox Court House, Matthew Brady persuaded a reluctant Lee to once again don his uniform and pose for a series of images taken at the back of Lee's residence in Richmond. The images included Lee posed sitting, as in this image, standing, and with his son Washington Custis Lee and his aide-de-camp Lt. Col. Walter H. Taylor. The image has been captioned "Gen. Lee" in pencil at the lower edge.
The letter and carte de visite have been matted and framed to the overall size of 18" x 16".
Condition: The letter has flattened folds with light toning at the folds. Bold signature. The CDV has toning and soiling throughout.
