Description

Robert E. Lee Letter Signed "RE Lee." One page, 7.5" x 9.5", Lexington; June 28, 1870. The letter is written on Washington College letterhead and relates to student J.J. Lloyd. The letter, addressed to J.J. Lloyd Esquire, praises Lloyd's son, writing, "I have the pleasure of communicating to you the action of the Faculty of Washington College, commending your son, J.J. Lloyd, for distinguished industry and success in his studies during the past session."

Robert E. Lee served as president of Washington College after the Civil War until his death in 1870. Lloyd's wife was cousin to Robert E. Lee, and Lee was reportedly in Lloyd's house when he received the news that he was to command the Army of Northern Virginia.

Condition: Flattened mail folds with light toning. A few spots of spoiling throughout. Boldly signed.
