Robert E. Lee: Letter Signed (LS) To General Longstreet Regarding Appointment.1 p., LS, Head Quarters Va., 7.5" x 9.75", March 18, 1863, folds reinforced on verso with archival tape, else fine. General Lee writes to Lieut. General James Longstreet regarding appointment of Capt. Winthrop to the A.A. Generals Department, in full: "As you have had a opportunity of judging of the character & qualifications of Capt. Winthrop I would be glad to know if you think sufficiently well of him to recommend him for a Captaincy in the a.a. Generals Department & also whether there is a vacancy with you or with any of your divisions to which he can be assigned if he is appointed. Very respectfully & Truly yours R Lee Genl". The Captain Winthrop mentioned is likely Stephen Winthrop who was appointed as Capt. A.A.G. to General Lee on April 30, 1863, and served in that position to the close of the war.
