Description

Robert E. Lee Carte de Visite Signed "R. E. Lee." Measuring 2.5" x 4", Lee is seen in this war-dated, sepia toned, vignetted portrait in Confederate uniform. Below his image he has placed his name. On the verso is written: "Given to me by Gen. Robert E. Lee when I was a child. I was at his home very often. Signed Virginia Morgan Robinson (Mrs. J. Enders Robinson) 113 S. 3rd St. Richmond Virginia." Fold in the left half of the image.

Mrs. Robinson was the wife of John Enders Robinson, grandson of John Enders Sr, who originally owned the buildings that would become Libby Prison in Richmond. The ownership was then split between his mother and her sister, the daughters of Enders Sr.
