Description
Robert E. Lee Autograph Note Signed, War Date, Commenting On A Sermon Given By 'Bishop Cobb'. Handwritten and signed by General Robert E. Lee, this letter dated December 19, 1864 is addressed to Reverend C. I. Gibson. Commenting on a sermon written by a Bishop Cobb, Lee writes: "My Dear Sir. I return with many thanks the sermon of Bishop Cobb. It is calculated to give great comfort. R E Lee 19 Dec 1864".Bishop Nicholas Hamner Cobb was a noted Episcopal Bishop in Alabama. On the date Lee wrote the letter, President Lincoln called for 300,000 more troops for the Union. Also on December 19, 1864 Savannah was evacuated.
Measuring 7.5" x 5", the letter is completely handwritten and signed by Lee. There is some light foxing and the letter has been laid down on cardboard.
