Description

Robert E. Lee and Millard Fillmore: Signed Railroad Bond. It would be difficult to imagine a stranger combination than Confederate General Robert E. Lee and "doughface" President Millard Fillmore, but their autographs both appear on this $1000 bond for the "Hudson & Berkshire Rail-Road Co." It measures 14" x 13.5" and is printed on a delicate parchment-like paper. Dated September 15, 1848, it is signed by the president of the railroad and by its Comptroller, Millard Fillmore. Three of its interest-bearing "warrants" have been redeemed. The back side is inscribed: "Owned & held by/ R E Lee/ Bt Col. U.S.A." Lee worked at Fort Hamilton in New York in 1842, as a military engineer. In 1848, he was working in Baltimore. Four cancellation marks run through the Fillmore signature. Lee's signature is unaffected and in excellent condition.
