Description
Pierre G.T. Beauregard Letter Signed "G.T. Beauregard Genl. Comdg." 5" x 8", Charleston, South Carolina; November 1, 1863. In a letter addressed to Governor Milledge L. Bonham, General Beauregard responds to an inquiry about sending forces into the mountains for the defense of that region. Written on Headquarters of the Department of South Carolina letterhead. It reads, in full:"Your letter of 24th inst. enclosing one from Col. Waddy Thompson and another from Messrs. Pullian & Patten has been received. I have ordered a light Battery to report at once to Col. Williams at Greenville S.C. I regret, as much as you do, my inability to send mounted troops for the defense of that part of the State. It is not prudent to withdraw at this critical moment from my already too small forces, a Regiment of old troops from the defense of Charleston. So soon as it can be done with safety, I will gladly send all the assistance in my power to Governor Vance." Docketing on verso records that a copy of this message was to be send to General Thompson and others at Granville.
Milledge Luke Bonham was an American politician and congressman who served as the 70th governor of South Carolina from 1862 until 1864. He was a major general in the South Carolina Militia and a brigadier general in the First Brigade of the Army of Northern Virginia under Beauregard. He resigned his commission, however, in January 1862, and was elected governor of South Carolina. Beauregard, meanwhile, had been charged with the protection of Charleston from Union land and naval attacks. Greenville was an important city, as it posed a threat as being a way for the Union army to invade from North Carolina. From the Bret J. Formichi American Civil War Rarities Collection.
Condition: Usual mail folds, with some small tears at the edges where folds created weakness. A few other areas of creasing throughout. Light toning and soiling at the edges. There is a small tear at the bottom edge. Minor dampstaining at top edge on verso.
