Description

Oliver Howard: Signed Carte de Visite. Undated Mathew Brady CDV with gold-ruled borders. It has a vignetted bust of Oliver Otis Howard, signed below, "O. O. Howard Maj. Gen." Howard (1830-1909), known as "The Christian General" for his piety, saw action at First Bull Run, Fair Oaks (for which he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor), Antietam, Gettysburg, Chancellorsville, and Sherman's March to the Sea and the Carolinas. He commanded the Army of Tennessee and helped found Howard University in Washington, D.C. This image was apparently sent by Howard to an autograph hound that sent it to him with her request written on the verso. Neat!
