Description
Nathanael Greene Autograph Letter Signed "Nath Greene." Two pages with additional address sheet, 8" x 13", Charleston, August 28, 1784. Writing to Col. Richard Lushington, a fellow officer from South Carolina, one year after the end of the Revolutionary War, Greene, one of General Washington's most reliable and trusted generals, sternly demands payment on a debt, in full as written: "The inclosed is a copy of your original agreement in the Charleston speculation by which you are jointly and severally bound. It is unnecessary to make any comments upon the subject. No man can be firmer bound to all the consequences than you are. It is not your misfortune that I became a guarantee for the Company, which never would have happened but for their being contractors for the Army, it is mean to be perplexed by the affair. You was bound originally and nothing could release you but the payment of the companies debts for the speculation, or getting discharges from the original Creditors. All I want is not to suffer. You see your situation and if you act wisely you will do what I recommended. My being guarantee places you neither in a worse or better situation as to the final claims of the original Creditors."
