Description
Leftwich Colony land transfer signed by Alamo defender Squire Daymon
Leftwich Colony Land Transfer Signed by Alamo Defender Squire Daymon. Three pages of a bifolium, 7.75" x 12.25"; January 10, 1834. In part: "Be it known to all men to whom these presents shall come that I Neils Peterson of the jurisdiction of Austin and Province of Texas being considerably indisposed and consequently unable to support myself and being at this time eighty years old can see no prospects of recovering my health and strength... I have sold to R M Coleman the league of land to which I am entitled by virtue of a certificate I obtained of Austin and Williams Authorizing me to select and have surveyed one league of land in the colony lately granted to them for the purpose of selling Europeans and Mexicans or for other words the colony known as Leftwich's old grant, he the said Coleman having paid me in hand fifty two dollars, and does furthermore bond himself to pay me such articles as my situation may require..." Neils Peterson signs with his mark, and Squire Daymon signs as a witness: "Squire M Daman".Very little is known of Daymon. In 1836, he was a resident of Gonzales, and participated in the Siege of Bexar. It is believed that he returned to Gonzales from Bexar in early February, and was part of the relief force from Gonzales that arrived at the Alamo on March 1, 1836. He died along with the rest of the Defenders on March 6, 1836. From the Robert E. Davis Collection.
Condition: Evenly toned with wear at folds resulting in partial separations and bits of paper loss. Bit of paper loss affecting the start of Daymon's signature.
