Description
Jubal A. Early Autograph Letter Twice Signed. Two pages on two leaves, 5" x 8", Drummondville, Ontario, Canada; January 4, 1869. In a letter addressed to J. K. Finlay, the former Confederate general responds to his inquiry concerning a soldier who participated in the Gettysburg campaign. It reads, in part: "In reply to your inquiry about Charles M. Barton, I have to say that I never had an aide of that name. In the year 1863 as we were moving into Pennsylvania, when I made an attack on Winchester then held by Milroy, a Lieutenant Barton, whose father lived in the neighborhood, acted as a guide for me to show me the way to a position which I wished to assume. I do not know his first name. He afterwards lost a leg in battle, and I have understood has died since the war. I think he had one or two brothers in the service, and I am inclined to think one of them acted as aide to Brig. Genl L. A. Walker, who commanded the Stonewall brigade. I knew the first names of none of them. Their father lived near Winchester and was primarily a lawyer, but I think died during the war. If the young man you are inquiring about is the son of the gentleman who lived near Winchester... you can obtain all necessary information by addressing a note to Major R. W. Hunter..." Signed, "J. A. Early"The letter is followed by a postscript that is initialed "JAE". A Lt. Charles Marshall Barton (1835-1862) is recorded with the Virginia Winchester Light Artillery, but he died of wounds sustained at the First Battle of Winchester in 1862. Presumably, the soldier in question was his younger brother William S. Barton (1838-1868) of the 2nd VA. Infantry who lost a leg after the Battle of Mine Run on November 27, 1863. Another Barton brother referenced by Early was Major Randolph J. Barton (1844-1921), a lieutenant on Walker's staff during May 1863. He was wounded in the leg on two separate occasions at the Battles of Third Winchester and Hatcher's Run. All told, the Barton family had six sons and one son-in-law who fought for the Confederacy, but only four survived the war. A typed transcription accompanies the letter.
Condition: Small paper attachment at lower margin recto of second leaf. Pencil notation at upper right corner recto of first leaf; pencil notations to verso of second. Verso of second leaf with thin strip of dried adhesive and paper attachment to one edge, presumably indicating prior mounting.
