Description

Joshua Chamberlain Autograph Letter Signed one page on The Florida West Coast Improvement Co. letterhead, 8" x 10.5", New York City, December 5, 1892, to a Mr. Williamson, n.p. It reads, "I have not kept this unduly long, hoping to make it more perfect as to dates, & other data. But I send it on thinking you will need to get your material in hand soon. You perceive most of my papers are only published in newspapers and other transient form. I don't know that this brings them within your plan & purpose. I will still endeavor to perfect the list, but you need not wait for me." Colonel Joshua L. Chamberlain and his 20th Maine Volunteers successfully defended Little Round Top at Gettysburg against a sustained and organized assault. Chamberlain's actions earned him the Medal of Honor, the adoration of the Northern public, and the grudging respect of his foes. Although primarily an academic, Chamberlain did engage in business ventures. such as the one outlined on the stationery offered here. Mounted to sheet by upper margin, a few small stains, area of collector's pencil notations. Overall very good condition. Ex. Henry E. Luhrs Collection.
