John Singleton Mosby Carte de Visite Signed "Jno. S. Mosby." 2.25" x 3.25". The Confederate cavalry commander has placed his signature below a vignette photograph of himself, beardless, a high-collared coat draped over his shoulders. Unevenly cut along the edges, else fine.Mosby earned his nickname "The Gray Ghost" for his uncanny ability to elude capture and go undetected by Union forces. His capture of General Stoughton behind Union lines was a feat of legendary proportion. According to lore, Mosby found Stoughton in bed; upon waking, the general demanded, "Do you know who I am?" To which Mosby replied, "Do you know Mosby, general?" "Yes! Have you got the rascal?" "No, but he has got you!" Mosby's troops were an effective force against the Union cavalry; they had great success in destroying Union communications and appropriating supplies. He would evade capture and remained active until the end of the war.
