Jack Hays Check Signed as Sheriff.

John Coffee "Jack" Hays Check Signed "John C Hays." One page, 6.25" x 2.5", San Francisco, April 4, 1851. Signed as sheriff on a D. J Tallant & Co. check, Hays is paying "...C. M. Brosnan...Seventy five Dollars..." Toned with uneven edges. Countersigned on the verso by C. M. Brosnan.

Legendary Texas Ranger, Captain John Coffee "Jack" Hays (1817-1883), moved to San Diego, California, in late 1849, and shortly thereafter headed north by steamer to San Francisco. Later that year, he became San Francisco's first elected sheriff. During 1851, Hays was busy raising funds while contending with the San Francisco Committee of Vigilance, an organization of citizens intent on curbing the widespread violence and crime found throughout the area by acting as both police force (which was virtually non-existent) and court. While not a Committee member himself, Hays initially had the approval of the organization, but was put at odds with them in August 1851 after COV members stormed his jail to recapture Robert McKenzie and Samuel Whittaker, criminals whom Hays had taken from Committee custody four days earlier. McKenzie and Whittaker were lynched an hour after being taken back by the Committee. Hays was reelected ten days later and resigned in 1853 to take a position as Surveyor General of California.
