Description

John Bell Hood: Partially-Signed Muster Roll.
9 1/4" x 3 3/4" portion of a ledger page on blue paper, part of a two-sided "Consolidation morning report, Fort Jones, Cal. Commanded by 2nd Lieut. George Crook 4th Infy." (Crook was a celebrated commander in the Civil War and Indian Wars). The report dates from June 1855. Signed on one side "John B. Hood/ Bvt 2nd Lt 4th Infy [illeg.]" Some of the entries appear to be in Hood's hand, as well. Hood later was wounded at Gettysburg and lost a leg at Chickamauga. Bold inscription and signature.
