General Villepigue requisitions canteens for his troops

John B. Villepigue War-dated Letter Signed. One page, 7.25" x 12", "Near Abbeville Miss[issippi];" August 8, 1862. A letter to Assistant Adjutant General Manning M. Kimmel requisitioning canteens for his men. "For months past I have been endeavoring to obtain a supply of canteens for my command... I consider it of so much importance that the men should not go into action at this season of the year without them that I have sent this special messenger with requisition to endeavor to procure them in advance of the arrival of the troops at Jackson." Signed, "Jno. B. Villepigue." With filing dockets on the verso.

Villepigue was in command of a brigade that would fight at the Second Battle of Corinth less than two months after the date of this letter. He led with distinction both in the attack and during the retreat, but the hardships of battle resulted in illness. He was sent to Port Hudson, Louisiana to recuperate. Unfortunately, his fever worsened, and he died of pneumonia on November 9, 1862. War-dated signatures by Villepigue are excessively scarce.

Condition: Flattened folds. With toning and a few light stains. Verso has light soiling and more pronounced staining.

Provenance: From the Private Collection of a Mississippi Gentleman.
