Description

Jeremiah Powell Letter Signed "Jer Powell." One page, 9" x 14.25", Boston, Massachusetts, July 16, 1778, on watermarked laid paper. The document sent of Governor Jonathan Trumbull of Connecticut, requests that "our Brethren in Connecticut . . . permit such a Quantity of Corn, Rye, Wheat and Flour to be transported from your State into this Government as may be Necessary for the use of its inhabitants." Congress had recently prohibited the transport of food and goods by water in order to keep them from falling into the hands of the British. Massachusetts was particularly hard hit by the embargo since much of the grain used in the state was imported from the Southern states. Connecticut had imposed its own embargo on the transport of goods by land fearing that they would suffer the same grain shortages. Powell appealed to Trumbull on humanitarian grounds. A revealing document showing the hardships suffered by the general civilian population during the Revolution. Folds, splits and paper loss along folds, toned.
