Description

Jefferson Davis Signed Check and Varina Davis Autograph Note Signed." This lot includes a signed check dated January 21, 1864, for $300 at the Farmers Bank of Virginia, it measures 6" x 3". It was only around a month after this check was signed that the first Northern prisoners arrived at the Confederate prison in Andersonville, Georgia. Accompanying the check is a 5.5" x 3.25" handwritten note from Varina Davis; she signs herself "V. JD." The note has no place or date and it reads, "Dear Sir, Please do not say to anyone that I have given you an autograph, I cannot spare another & it would inundate me with requests for them." A wonderful pair of signatures!

The check is in very fine condition; small tears present on the edges. The note is in very condition; usual folds are present. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
