Description
Israel Putnam Excessively Rare Autograph Letter to General Gage, Three Days After the Battle of Bunker Hill! Autographed Letter Signed, 1 page, 7.5" by 6.5", Camp at Cambridge, June 20, 1775. To General Thomas Gage, under whose command Putnam had just fought at Bunker Hill. The condition of this letter, which has been affixed to a slightly larger sheet, is such that while it is boldly written in dark ink, and quite striking, it is also separated at the folds: restoration, however, will make it a very fine piece. A better letter than this, written just after the first battle of the American Revolution, will be hard to find. A Mrs. Temple's house, Putnam reports, is in the line of fire; a cannon shot hit her barn: he thus offers Gage, most respectfully, "a word to the wise." In full, and with his original spelling: " May it Pleas your Exilancy I was Laust Night at mr Tempels hous and would acquaint your Exilancy that mrs Tempel is in the gratest anxiety and distres and no wonder at it considering her siteuation which you must be aquainted with being in a line of your fier but trusting in Your Exlancys goodnes hope you would ordor your troops not to fier on the primesary acept you shuld be anoyed from that quartor I have sat a small gard at hur hous to keep hur from bing insulted by the pepel of the contry but was sorry to see won of your cannon shot hit the barn which gave hur grait unesenes a word to the wise is suffisont. Addue..." So started the American Revolution. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.Auction Info
