Description
Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette Autograph Letter Signed. One page (in French), 10 x 7 inches (sight), Paris; February 23, no year. Matted and framed alongside an original drawing of Lafayette in ink and pencil, to an overall size of 15 x 22 inches. On the verso of the drawing, a pencil annotation reads: "General Lafayette / Seen from life / Original sketch." An engraving of this portrait can be found in A Sketch of the Tour of General Lafayette, on His Late Visit to the United States, published by A. W. Thayer in 1824.In this brief letter (untranslated), the Marquis de Lafayette requests a meeting with his correspondent before he departs the city. Signed, "Lafayette."
Condition: Not examined outside of frame. Letter is lightly toned with smoothed folds and a few light stains; adhesive remnants from previous mounting; remnants of sealing wax near center fold. Scattered foxing and staining to drawing. A few light scuffs to the frame.
