    Description

George B. Erath Autograph Letter Signed "G. B. Erath." One and one-half bifolium pages, 8" x 10", Mount Vernon [Texas], April 10, 1843, to Michael Reed of Brazos County, Texas, confirming payment for surveying. The letter reads in part:

"By this opportunity I can inform you that I made for you last year the survey of John Rector one league and labor and partly made the survey of one labor adjoining but cannot return it unless at present, but the league and labor has been returned last year, before the land office closed and having no chance to send you notice it lay so.

"I am at present very needy of everything and like very much to get my fees which is thirty dollars for the league and labor not charging yet the separate labor, having to hunt severall days for the old lines I think it very resonable and offer to take it in cattle or any stock delivered in this County and if I could see you about Court I probably could make some arrangement with you if you could settle it with Wllm Thomson and Hobby at Nashville it would suit me."

On the address panel (fourth page), Erath writes that the letter was delivered "by the favor of some gentlemen going to Brystly Court." George Erath laid out the towns of Caldwell, Stephenville, and Waco. He fought in the Texas Revolution and served later as Texas Ranger company captain. Erath wrote this letter from Mount Vernon, Texas; there are two towns in Texas named Mount Vernon (Franklin County and Washington County). No evidence exists that Erath lived in either county.

Condition: With expected toning and folds; slight staining. One small hole in the final page caused by the original opening of the wax seal.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
