Description

George Armstrong Custer: Autograph Letter Signed Two Months before His Death. Signed "G. A. Custer" and initialed twice. One page, on lined paper, Fort Lincoln [Dakota Territory], April 12, 1876. Measuring 7.5" x 9.75" (sight) and matted and framed in gray to an overall size of 14" x 16". Written to A. H. Barnes, the letter reads in full:

"A large number or parties in and near Bismarck have been arrested and charged with committing [illegible] thefts of government property from the post. They and their friends are making strong efforts to secure the removal of U S Commissioner Jackman before whom all these cases have been taken. If he is removed I believe the public interests will suffer and that the guilty parties alone will gain by any change."

Two months after he wrote this letter, Custer, leading the U. S. 7th Cavalry against a combined force of Lakota, Arapaho, and Northern Cheyenne, died in combat at the Battle of the Little Bighorn.

There are two brief postscripts added beneath which he has initialed but which are largely illegible. With usual folds and lightly smudged due to use of soft lead pencil, paper is very clean and signature is quite clear.
