Description
George Armstrong Custer: A Framed Personal Check with his Bold Signature. From a small quantity which were discovered, dated February 14th (Valentines Day!) 1874, while Custer and his 7th Cavalry were stationed in Louisville, Kentucky, where they were tasked with restraining the Ku Klux Klan and bushwhackers. It is made out to Mrs. Clifton, a seamstress patronized by Libbie Custer. Abandoned by her husband, Mrs. Clifton then married Sergeant James Nash, personal assistant of Tom Custer, who also deserted her. A third marriage of 7th Cavalry Sergeant John Noonan apparently lasted-until his death in 1878. Mrs. Clifton was apparently illiterate, as she endorsed the check with an "X," witnessed by one "Mrs. Clayton." Beautifully matted and framed with an original cabinet photo of Custer in 7th Cavalry uniform, itself a valuable collectible. Overall 18" x 11.25".Auction Info
