Description
George A. Custer Document Signed during his brief 5 month assignment in Texas. One page, 10.25" x 16", Texas, circa December 1865. A partially printed abstract listing "Articles Lost or Destroyed in the Public Service at Indianola, Texas while in possession and charge of L.A. Poor..." This particular abstract lists the loss of three mules and seven hickory brooms; Custer signs adding his rank, "GA Custer Maj Genl" at bottom as commanding officer. Custer had been assigned to Texas as part of General Sheridan's strategy to prevent Confederate entrenchment in Mexico. During his uneventful posting in Texas, Custer's strict adherence to the enforcement of regulations prohibiting foraging, lawlessness, and destruction of private property led to the alienation and dislike of the men who served underneath him, as well as the respect and gratitude of the local population. This document is in pristine condition and a highly desirable relic of Custer's short stay in Texas.Auction Info
