Description
Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben Document Signed. One page on vellum, 13 x 7 1/2 inches (sight), Philadelphia; February 11, 1782. Matted and framed alongside a printed portrait of Steuben to an overall size of 26 1/2 x 15 1/2 inches. Baron von Steuben appoints "Walter Stewart Esquire, Colonel of the Second Pennsylvania Regiment of foot...Inspector of the Northern Army." Signed, "Steuben" adding his paraph. With red paper seal affixed at the bottom left.By 1782, Walter Stewart had established himself as one of the Continental Army's most capable officers, having distinguished himself at Brandywine, Germantown, Monmouth, and Yorktown. His appointment as Inspector of the Northern Army, an office shaped by von Steuben's own reforms, was the final major post of his military career. Stewart retired from the Continental Army in early 1783, turning to commercial business in Philadelphia and serving as a general in the state militia.
Condition: Not examined out of frame. Lightly toned with smoothed folds. Ink stain at center and light, scattered soiling. A few very small instances of loss, not affecting text.
