Description

Former Confederate General James J. Archer Document Signed. One page, 16 x 12 1/4 inches, [Fort Colville]; [circa 1860]. A document titled "Consolidated Abstract of Provisions Sold to Officers in the Field in the quarter ending on the 31st December 1859," listing quantities of pork, beef, flour, beans, rice, coffee, and other sundries purchased by officers in the United States Army. Signed, "JJ Archer / Capt 9th Infy / Comdg," and countersigned by Charles Garrison Harker as 2nd Lieutenant of the 9th Infantry.

James J. Archer (1817-1864) participated in many important battles during the war including the Peninsula Campaign, Seven Days, Second Bull Run, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville. He was wounded on the first day of Gettysburg and captured, giving him the distinction of being the first general officer captured from Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. Archer suffered from bad health during his Civil War service and as a result he was exchanged in the late summer of 1864. He returned to Confederate service but succumbed to health problems in October 1864.

The countersigner of this document, Charles G. Harker (1837-1864), also served during the Civil War, but for the Union. He saw action at the Battle of Shiloh, the Siege of Corinth, the Battle of Perryville, the Battle of Stones River, the Battle of Chickamauga, and the Siege of Knoxville. Harker died in June 1864, when he was shot from his horse and mortally wounded near Kennesaw Mountain.

Condition: Lightly toned and creased at folds; docketed on the verso.
