Description

Enola Gay Crew Signed Limited Edition Print: "The Beginning of the End" by William S. Phillips. A 25 1/2 x 22 inch (sight) full-color, limited edition print, number 213 of 1000; released in 1998. Matted and framed to an overall size of 33 x 29 inches.

Signed by five of the original crew of the Enola Gay at the lower margin: Paul Tibbets, Thomas W. Ferebee, Theodore J. Van Kirk, Morris R. Jeppson, Richard H. Nelson. Also signed by the artist, William S. Phillips.

Manned by a total of twelve men, the Enola Gay dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. Led by Tibbets, the mission was credited with leading to Japan's surrender. The caption at the bottom margin of the print reads: "The B-29 Enola Gay returns from her August 6, 1945 rendezvous with destiny, and sets a course for the Tinian Island in the Marianas. In the distance lies Iwo Jima and her emergency landing strips—fought for and won United States Navy and Marine Corps. The distant battleground and the aircraft in flight are symbolic reminders of the costs and the beginning of the end of World War I."

Condition: Not examined outside of frame; print appears fine. Some scuffs, scratches, and edgewear to the frame.
