Description
David Crockett: Free Frank [FF] Stampless Cover. 9.5" x 8" manuscript stampless cover, addressed in the hand of Davy Crockett to: "John Wickham Esq/ Richmond Va" and inscribed by him in the upper right comer "Free/ David Crockett". Crockett represented Tennessee in the U. S. House of Representatives from March 4, 1827 to March 4, 1835, with the exception of the 1831-1833 term. His 1831 defeat was based on his opposition to the Indian Removal Act, a proposal to abolish West Point and opposition to a pension to be given the widow of Stephen Decatur. The cover is endorsed "David Crockett/ 6th July 1829/ rev'd. 14th will/ write as requested/ within letter/ to Col. Lambert". Loss at top, minor tear and folds at bottom, not affecting inscription. Handsomely double-matted and framed. Wickham was a prominent attorney from a Loyalist family. He served as a young ensign in the Revolutionary War and was captured and tried as a spy. He later helped Loyalist families in Richmond collect old debts from colonial merchants. He successfully defended Aaron Burr in his treason trial.Auction Info
