Description
Daniel Boone agrees to survey land
Daniel Boone Surveying Agreement Signed. One page, 8.25" x 11.5", n.p., May 1, 1780. This agreement was made "Between Daniel Boone & William Hays of the one part, & Thomas Jameson of the other part." Boone and Hays were to "to Locate enter & survey Seven thousand five hundred acres" for Jameson, though the location is not specified. The document reads in part:"Witnesseth that the 2d Boone & Hays doth covenant and agree to Locate enter & survey Seven thousand five hundred acres . . . the 2d Jameson doth engage as soon as the plats of the surveys are made out to defray all expenses accruing from the surveying and obtaining the 2d plats and for the performance of the above agreement Both parties do bind themselves their Heirs &c &c in the penal sum of Seventy Thousand pounds in witness whereof they have interchangably set our hands and seals."
The agreement is signed by Boone, Hays, Jameson, and two witnesses. William Hays was Boone's son-in-law. One story says that when Hays informed Boone that he wanted to marry his daughter Susannah, the frontiersman warned him that she might be unfaithful, and she was. Hays was a surveyor, likely when he first met Boone. He worked with Boone to help him improve his reading and writing skills, and also taught him how to survey. The two worked together as surveyors on jobs such as the one agreed upon in this document. Later in life, Hays drank heavily. During a drinking spell in 1804, he was shot in the chest and killed by his own son-in-law, who was defending himself against the staggering, gun-toting Hays. This document is toned with smoothed folds. Matted and framed with an image of Boone and a rectangular name plate to an overall size of 17.5" x 33".
