Description

Confederate Guerrilla Champ Ferguson Carte de Visite Twice Signed. Measuring 2.25" x 4", a very tall Ferguson is seen standing next to one of his guards at the time of his trial for the murder of 53 individuals. Ferguson has placed his signature below and again on the verso with the date August 31, 1865, also in his hand. An additional inscription is found at the upper edge of the verso, in another hand reading, "C.B. Hughes / Artist / Church St." Light staining at the lower edge and on the verso does not affect the photograph.

Ferguson (1821-1865) was a Kentucky native with a reputation for brutality and lawlessness who served under John Hunt Morgan during the latter's first raid into Kentucky. During the war he indiscriminately killed Union soldiers and, at times, pro-Union civilians. Upon his return home in May 1865, he was arrested by Federal authorities and charged in the deaths of 53 people. Ferguson admitted to killing over 100 people personally, including many of those listed in the indictment. His defense consisted primarily of his status as an enemy combatant. Not surprisingly, he was convicted and was hanged in October 1865.
